Beth  Elizabeth Mowins known by her popular stage name Beth is an American BNA sports journalist and popular host of American play-by-play announcer who is currently working with ESPN, CBS, and the Marquee Sports Network.

Beth was born Elizabeth Mowins on May 26, 1967, but she is best known by her nickname, Beth. She is the second woman to ever call nationally televised college football games for ESPN, which she did in 2005.

She is a college sports commentator for women’s collegiate sports. She began performing play-by-play for National Football League games in 2017, and in 2021, she became the first woman to call an NFL game that was broadcast on national television. Beth Mowins’s father, Len Mowins, coached high school basketball. Beth Mowins was born in Syracuse, New York, and her father is also named Len. She is an avid sports fan and currently attends North Syracuse High School in New York, where she competes in football, basketball, and softball.

She attended Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where she played varsity basketball for four years and earned a BA in 1989.

Professional Career

Beth Mowins began her career in 1991 at WXHC-FM Radio in Homer, New York, where she was the director of both the news and sports departments.

She began her career at ESPN in 1994, covering several collegiate sports like basketball, football, volleyball, and softball. She has served as the primary commentator for the network’s coverage of softball events, such as the Women’s College World Series.

She worked alongside Cat Whitehill during the telecasts of the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup that were produced by ESPN’s tertiary broadcast crew.

In 2015, she was hired to do the play-by-play commentary for the preseason television broadcasts of both the Oakland and Las Vegas Raiders.

She was the second female play-by-play announcer in the history of the NFL regular season, and she was the first female broadcaster to ever call a nationally televised game of the National Football League (NFL).

In the same year that Mowins made her debut as a host for the NBC Olympics broadcast of softball at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, she also began her work as a commentator for NBA games on ESPN. 

As part of ESPN’s ambition to have an all-woman broadcasting and production crew for the very first time on a national scale, Beth Mowins collaborated with analyst Doris Burke to call an NBA game on ESPN in 2020.

This was part of ESPN’s plan to have an all-woman crew for the very first time. The next season, which begins in 2023 and concludes on International Women’s Day, will see Mowins and Burke’s return to the show together.
