Professional Career

When Doris Burke was a college student, she began her broadcasting career. She was a student at Providence College. She played basketball for the Providence Friars women’s team in Rhode Island.

She served as their point guard for four years during that time. She averaged 12.1 points and 5.3 assists per game throughout the course of her career.

During her first season, she had the most assists in the East Conference, and in 1986 and 1987, she was twice selected to the All-Big East and Big East All-Tournament teams.

In 1987, she was also recognized as an All-American. She was the co-female athlete of the year for her college. In 1999, she received recognition from the Providence College Hall of Fame as the sixth woman.

When she left Providence, she had 602 assists, which made her the all-time leader. As of 2012, she was still second in the career category. In 1990, Doris Burke began her career in broadcasting as a radio analyst for her alma mater’s women’s sports events.

In the same year, she started working on Big East Women’s TV games, and in 1997, she started working on Big East Men’s TV games. Since 1991, she has been employed by ESPN in a variety of roles.

In addition, she has held positions with the WNBA, the New York Liberty, ESPN’s men’s college basketball coverage, ABC, and the NBA, beginning with the 2003–2004 NBA season.

In the year 2000, she made history by being the first-ever female radio and television analyst for the New York Knicks. Doris Burke was admitted to Providence College’s Hall of Fame in 1999.

She received the USA Today Rudy Award in 2003 for being the best new face in sports television. As of the year 2004, she has already been recognized by the Institute for International Sport by being inducted into the Scholar-Athlete Hall of Fame.

Providence College conferred an honorary doctorate on her in 2005. She was admitted to the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) chose to honor her athletic and professional achievements by bestowing upon her the Silver Anniversary Award in the year 2012.

In 2018, she was honored with the Curt Gowdy Media Award, which entitled her to induction into the Basketball Hall of Fame.
