Machulla was born on October 7, 1960, in the town of Manhasset, New York, in the United States of America,  to the family Mr. And Mrs. Fred  and Margarethe MacMullan.

As a young girl, she enjoyed playing street hockey and her family lived in a more organized community, so she often got together with her other siblings to play hockey.

MacMullan was the first girl in her community to have a street hockey net, which gave her the opportunity to play hockey when she was a small child despite the fact that other males who participated in the game wouldn’t let her. At the age of fifteen, MacMulla began her career in sports journalism by writing about the female teams at her high school for the local paper. She set a new record.

The Boston Globe hired MacMullan as an intern in the news division. She worked as the Boston Globe’s editor and columnist in 1982 until purchasing the paper in 2008.

When MacMullan collaborated with Larry Bird on his book “Bird Watching” in 1999, Geno: In Pursuit of Perfection Worth Geno Auriemma was published in 2006.

Shaquille O’Neal, a star in the NBA, collaborated with MacMullan to pen his autobiography, “Shaq Uncut: My Story.” In 2011.
