Early Childhood and Education

Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi, who is of Yoruba heritage and is from Ibadan, was the first-born of the twins when he was born. He was raised by his father up until the age of eight, at which point he moved to the northern area of Nigeria. He spent his formative years under his father’s custody.

His primary education came to a close at Baptist Day School Idi-kan in 1949, establishing the groundwork for his subsequent enrolment at Ibadan Grammar School (IGS) in 1950, an institution where he experienced a fruitful and enlightening educational tenure. His primary education was completed in 1949.

Professional Career

After completing his education at Ibadan Grammar School (IGS) in 1955, Akinkunmi began his career as a civil servant by taking a job as an agriculturist at the Western Region Secretariat in Ibadan. This was the beginning of his long and successful career.

After a number of years of dedicated service, he was accepted into what is now known as Lambeth College, which is located in Norwood Technical College’s former location in London. There, he pursued education in the subject of electrical engineering.

While he was a student at this particular establishment, he was the one who came up with the design that is now used for the flag of Nigeria.

When he got back to Nigeria in 1963, he picked up where he had left off in the agricultural department of the secretariat in Ibadan. Before he departed for foreign studies, he had been working there.

During his time as a public worker, which lasted until 1994, he worked his way up to the position of Assistant Superintendent of Agriculture. During this time, he was promoted. On September 29, 1994, he was honored with the distinguished honor of Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic (OFR), and he was also made an honorary life presidential adviser at a ceremony that took place at the Abuja Conference Centre. Both of these honors were bestowed upon him in acknowledgment of his accomplishments.

Designing the Nigerian Flag

Akinkunmi participated in a competition that caught his attention while perusing a library. In his own words, he recounted, “I gathered information about the criteria for designing a flag that would befit a country on the brink of independence. After engaging in the competition, my design emerged as the victor in the year 1958.”

In the year 2021, Akinkunmi unveiled an impressive accomplishment—the world’s largest national flag—in the city of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
