Early Childhood:

Philip Shaibu was born into a Christian family in Kaduna, Nigeria. His upbringing was deeply rooted in Christian values, with his father, the late Pastor Francis Osikpomobo Shaibu, and his mother, Lucy Momoh, instilling strong moral principles in him from a young age.

Growing up in a religious household, Shaibu was surrounded by teachings of compassion, honesty, and integrity, shaping his character and guiding his actions throughout his life.

He began his education at St. Augustine Primary School in Tundu Wada, Kaduna, before completing his primary education at L.E.A Primary School in Barnawa, Kaduna State.

He obtained his West African Senior School Certificate from Saudana Memorial Secondary School in Kawo, Kaduna, in 1989.

Shaibu pursued higher education at the University of Jos, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 2000.

During his time at the university, he served as the President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) from 2000 to 2001. He later obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Benin in 2015.

Family Life

Philip Shaibu is married to Mrs. Maryann Philip-Shaibu, with whom he has children.

Private Career

After completing his education, Shaibu worked with the Nigerian Prisons Service in Abuja. He voluntarily retired as an Assistant Inspector of Prisons in 2002 to pursue a career in politics.

Political Career

Shaibu’s political journey began in 2003 when he contested elections into the Edo State House of Assembly under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) but was unsuccessful.

He later won the election to represent the people of Etsako West Constituency in the Edo State House of Assembly in 2007 under the platform of the Action Congress (AC). During his time in the assembly, he served as the Majority Leader from February 2010 to June 2015.

In 2015, he won the Etsako Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat. In 2016, he became the Deputy Governor of Edo State alongside Governor Godwin Obaseki after winning the gubernatorial election. He resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) on June 16, 2020.

The Edo State House of Assembly impeached Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu after months of tension with Governor Godwin Obaseki, ending their power struggle. Shaibu’s impeachment occurred during a Monday plenary session in Benin City, following a report by a committee appointed by Chief Judge Justice Daniel Okungbowa.

Despite Shaibu’s lawsuit challenging the impeachment, initiated by the assembly last week, accusations of perjury and secrecy breaches led to his removal.

Speaker Blessing Agbebaku stated Shaibu failed to respond to the impeachment notice within seven days, prompting the assembly to investigate further.

The impeachment reflects the conflict over Shaibu’s bid for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship primary, seen as challenging Obaseki’s authority.

Despite Shaibu’s attempt, businessman Asue Ighodalo emerged as the PDP’s flagbearer, heightening tensions in Edo State.

Philip Shaibu’s journey from a humble background to becoming the Deputy Governor of Edo State showcases his dedication to public service and commitment to making a difference in the political landscape of Nigeria.
