PROFILE OF BRIGADIER GENERAL AW BUTU (DSS, mANG, mEMAN, mASCT, mTRCN, Ph.D)

Brigadier General Ali William Butu, a native of Takum Local Government Area in Taraba State, is an accomplished scholar and distinguished military officer. Commissioned into the Nigerian Army Education Corps as a Lieutenant in June 1992, he holds the rank of Associate Professor of Geography and currently serves as the Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the Nigerian Army University Biu, Borno State.

Throughout his illustrious career, Brig Gen AW Butu has held various key positions, including serving as an Instructor at the Nigerian Military School Zaria, Staff Officer at the Nigerian Army Education Corps Headquarters in Yaba, Lagos, and Commandant of Command Secondary Schools in Abuja and Kaduna. He has also served as Assistant Director of Education at the Army Headquarters in Abuja and as Registrar of the Nigerian Army College of Environmental Sciences in Makurdi.

Brig Gen AW Butu obtained his Ph.D. from Ahmadu Bello University of Zaria in 2011 and rose to the rank of Associate Professor while lecturing at the Department of Geography at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna. During his tenure at the Nigerian Army University Biu, he served as the Head of the Department of Geography and as the Dean of Students’ Affairs Division.

As a mentor and academic leader, Brigadier General Ali Williams Butu has supervised numerous postgraduate students, including 5 Ph.D., 25 M.Sc., and 15 B.Sc. candidates. He has also served as an external examiner for several universities and has presented research papers at numerous national and international conferences. Additionally, he has authored over 66 publications in high-impact journals and contributed to 5 chapters in edited books.

Brig Gen Butu is highly regarded for his expertise in environmental impact assessment (EIA) and has served as a consultant to the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and the Federal Ministry of Environment. 

He is a member of several professional bodies, including the Association of Nigerian Geographers, the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, and the Environmental Management Association of Nigeria. Additionally, he is a respected member of the African Society of Chemical Toxicology and the Nigerian Association of Hydrological Sciences.

Brigadier General Ali Williams Butu (rtd), an esteemed Associate Professor of Geography and Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Sciences at the Nigerian Army University in Biu, Borno State, has passed away. Butu, a native of the Takum Local Government Area in Taraba State, breathed his last in Abuja following a brief illness. He was 58 years old.

His final resting place will be at Butu village, located at Km 5 on the Takum-Kashimbilla Road in the Takum Local Government Area of Taraba. The burial ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, April 27, 2024.

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba expressed profound sorrow at Butu’s demise, describing it as a shocking and painful loss to both the state and the nation. In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Digital Communication, Emmanuel Bello, the governor lamented that Butu’s passing came at a time when his wisdom and leadership were most needed.

Kefas highlighted Butu’s remarkable qualities, including his courage, attention to detail, and unwavering dedication, which left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. He also emphasized Butu’s invaluable expertise, which was highly sought after nationwide and globally on matters of consultancy.

Despite his numerous achievements, Butu remained humble and lived an exemplary life. Kefas concluded by expressing that the nation and the world have lost a remarkable intellectual, a person of integrity, and a champion for environmental conservation causes.
